Our History

The Interprofessional Pain and Headache Rounds and Orofacial Pain Case History Series have a 20+ year history of delivering these programs at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Massachusetts General Hospital. We have hosted a variety of clinicians, public policy experts, scientists, and patients from around the world, with live lectures occurring at both Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the historic Ether Dome at Massachusetts General Hospital. The Case Studies in Orofacial Pain and Literature Reviews provide another interactive educational forum for dentists, dentists-in-training and Dental Hygienists. The program currently includes the CODA approved orofacial pain training programs with a focus on the presentation of complex chronic pain cases, many of which require assessment and management around issues of substance use risk and need for interdisciplinary care.

We now provide immediate virtual access with the current platform to attendees from multiple disciplines, with access spanning over 70 countries and territories.

Registrants for the Rounds typically number 150-450 per session, with the Saturday Case History sessions having attendance between 300-600. CE/CME is offered for physicians, dentists, nurses and psychologists for the lecture series. Dental CE is offered for the Saturday programs, which are sponsored by 42 North Dental. Both programs are complimentary.

Within the last four years, the Rounds program has also provided a successful clinical trials platform for testing educational materials. For example, the Controlled Substance Risk Mitigation Series for Dentistry tested a series of ten training modules with 565 attendees. We provide access to academic didactic materials for attendees, including our recent collaborations with the Dental Clinics of North America Series.

The Interdisciplinary Pain and Headache Rounds Lectures are presented as part of the Educational Core of the NIH-NIDCR TMD IMPACT Collaborative: Mass General Brigham, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
